Rules:

  1. Any items that are able to be recycled (per chart below) should be placed in the can labeled “Recycle” under the kitchen sink. All items must be clean/rinsed!
  2. Any items that are able to be composted (per chart below), should be placed in the pail on the deck labeled “Compost”Pail should be closed tightly.
  3. Any items that are in the “Out” list in each chart below should be placed in the trash container under the sink.  This container has a bag.  If you have followed #1 and #2 above, you should produce no more than 1 bag of trash a week.

What to Recycle - The IN List

  • Plastic #1-7
  • Foil, cans
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Empty bottles – any color glass
  • Milk and Juice Cartons
  • Cardboard, cereal boxes, gift boxes, shoe boxes
  • Newspapers, magazines, junk mail, gift wrap
  • Paper shopping bags, books
  • What Not to Recyle - The OUT List

  • Hypodermic needles or sharp objects
  • Food, trash
  • Styrofoam packing (i.e., meat/veggie pkg.)
  • Styrofoam peanuts
  • Potato chip bags
  • Plastic food bags
  • Bubble wrap
  • Compost

    What to Compost - The IN List

  • Coffee grounds and filters and tea bags
  • Cotton and wool rags
  • Eggshells
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Houseplants
  • Nut shells
  • Shredded newspaper
  • What Not to Compost - The OUT List - Create odor problems and attract pests such as rodents and flies

  • Dairy products (e.g., butter, egg yolks, milk,
        sour cream, yogurt)
  • Fats, grease, lard, or oils
  • Meat or fish bones and scraps
  • Lobster or crab shells and scraps
  • Fill out the form on the dining table and, at departure, drop it in the box outside the Check-in Cottage along with your key.  Drawing by November 1st, 2010.  The winner will be notified immediately thereafter.  Odds of winning about 1 in 300!  *Valid for the 2011 season and to be used only at cottages  located at 410 Main Street, Southwest Harbor, ME.
