We believe that Mount Desert Island (MDI) is a very special place, and we are trying to do our part to ensure that it will remain as beautiful as it is today for future generations to enjoy. To that end, we are taking steps to be as environmentally responsible as possible.
- You will find that many of the products we supply for your use and that we use to clean the cottages are environmentally friendly.
- The amenities are provided by Green Suites International as follows:
- Shampoo: Natura Apricot Keratin
This oil-free formula nourishes your hair with a mixture of vegetable proteins, botanicals and vitamins
- Conditioner: Natura Apricot Keratin
Strengthens hair with a cornucopia of proteins and amino acids
- Hand Soap / Bath Gel: Natura Apricot Keratin
Natural oils of Apricot, Sunflower and Vitamin are concentrated into a formula of unequaled quality
Amenities are in large, refillable, pump containers. This reduces the amount of waste produced when using sample size amenities.
- The cleaner for kitchen and bath is Simple Green.
- The carpet cleaner, Evolut-ion , is soap free, does not contain strong scents and is safe for humans and the environment.
- We use organic laundry detergent and stain fighter.
- The facial tissue is from Marcal and is 100% recycled and 40% post-consumer content, which is the best we have been able to find at this point.
- The toilet paper is from either Earth First or Seventh Generation, both of which are 100% recycled with 80% post-consumer content.
- The dishsoap is organic, usually Seventh Generation.
- We recycle old towels to clean the cottages.
- We use vinegar and towels to clean the windows, rather than window cleaner and paper towels.
- We donate old sheets and towels to shelters.
- We use compact fluorescent light bulbs wherever possible.
- A recycling bin has been provided for paper, cans and plastic. We will sort these items for you and take them to be recycled.
- We participate in Project Planet. Guests place towels in bottom of shower when they want fresh ones. Sheets are changed when the guest leaves the card on the bed. This results in reduced water, energy and detergent use and decreased sheet/towel replacement (all of which help the environment).
- We are also beginning to purchase bamboo or organic cotton sheets to replace old bed linens.
